I have always wanted to try Yabu (since I heard a lot of rave reviews about that restaurant) so last May 12, me and my two brothers decided to treat the whole family in celebration of mother’s day.
I wanted to make a reservation in advance so I called their restaurant (Mall of Asia branch) 2-3 days ahead but the guy who answered the phone said that they no longer accept reservations. If you want to eat, for example, at 7:00PM, you need to go there early so that you can have your name listed. In our case, we arrived around 6:45PM and by that time, there were already 20+ names listed on their sheet and mind you… their branch in Mall of Asia isn’t that big – I heard some people had to wait for more than an hour. We, on the other hand, had to wait for about 45 minutes before we were seated.
Now, let’s talk about food. Yabu offers several types of Katsu that you can choose from. Their price starts at Php300++ and can go as high as Php600++ depending on your order. What I like about it is that their serving is big plus it comes with a bowl of fruit and unlimited servings of rice, miso soup and cabbage so price-wise, it’s worth it. 🙂
This is for the Tonkatsu sauce. The waitress taught us how to make our sauce more delicious through the help of these sesame seeds.
And now here’s the food we ordered:
*The last 2 pictures above were my orders. I had the cabbage removed since I don’t like vegetables and I also added an order of Jumbo Prawn. To be honest, I found the prawn to be a little expensive but I really wanted to eat one so I ordered anyway. When I got my order, I was partly disappointed because the Jumbo Prawn didn’t look jumbo at all.
I know that Yabu offers several Mixed Katsu sets, one of which is the Hire Katsu Set (sample picture above) that includes a piece of Tiger Prawn as well as a bite of Cream Dory and Scallop and the price is only Php485 but I didn’t order this one because I wanted to taste Rosu (juicy pork cutlet with trimming of fat) not Hire (flaky pork cutlet with no fat). Too bad…
What’s our verdict? Well, I don’t think my mom and my dad enjoyed it that much. I guess they are at that age where fried food isn’t as pleasing as it is for young adults. LOL! As for me, I’d say that the food was okay. It was delicious, yes, but I may have expected more due to all the great reviews I’ve heard/read. As for the Tonkatsu sauce, I kind of prefer the one from Tokyo Tokyo – maybe there were too much sesame seeds in there, which I am not really a fan of. I want to give this restaurant another shot. Next time, I’ll order Pork Kurobuta and I’ll lessen the sesame seeds. I believe that there is a reason why a lot of people love to eat here and why it is almost always jam-packed… I would love to be one of them so I’ll see you again soon, Yabu. 😉
